A suggested plan
- Day 1Arrive and settle inTake the Eurostar to Paris, or fly to Nice or Lyon, and check in. Spend the evening on foot: beside the Seine in Paris, along the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, or in the old lanes of Vieux Lyon.
- Day 2The landmarksIn Paris, book a morning time slot at the Louvre, then go up the Eiffel Tower later in the day. In Nice, walk the 7 km Promenade des Anglais, then climb Castle Hill by the stairs or the lift for the view. In Lyon, take the funicular up to Fourvière for the basilica and the Roman theatres.
- Day 3Art, markets and old streetsIn Paris, see the Impressionists at the Musée d'Orsay, a former railway station, then walk up to Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre. In Nice, browse the Cours Saleya market in Vieux Nice on any morning from Tuesday to Sunday, then visit the Musée Matisse in Cimiez. In Lyon, explore the traboules, hidden passageways between the old streets, and keep your voice down, as people live there.
- Day 4A day tripFrom Paris, spend the day at Versailles, about 30 minutes away by RER C and a short walk; book a timed slot, and note that the palace closes on Mondays. From Nice, take bus 82 up to the hilltop village of Èze, or walk the coastal path to Villefranche-sur-Mer. From Lyon, Vienne is 20 minutes away by TER train.
- Day 5A day at your own paceIn Paris, visit Notre-Dame, which is free to enter, then wander along the Seine. In Nice, spend time at the beach, or ride the free Lou Passagin ferry across the port in summer. In Lyon, find the Fresque des Lyonnais mural and try pike quenelles, a local speciality, at a bouchon.
- Day 6Last morning and homeCheck out and travel home. Leave plenty of time for the station or airport, including Eurostar check-in and passport control if you came by train.
