A suggested plan
- Day 1Arrive and settle inFly out and check in. Take an easy first walk in the evening: to the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Marienplatz in Munich, or the square in front of Cologne Cathedral.
- Day 2The landmarksIn Berlin, visit the glass dome of the Reichstag, which is free but needs registering online in advance, then walk through the Brandenburg Gate. In Munich, hear the Glockenspiel on Marienplatz at 11:00 or noon, then have lunch at the Viktualienmarkt. In Cologne, book your cathedral visit online, then climb the 533 steps of the tower for the view.
- Day 3History and neighbourhoodsIn Berlin, see the original Wall and watchtower at the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse, then the murals of the East Side Gallery. In Munich, walk through the English Garden to watch the surfers on the Eisbach wave. In Cologne, cross the Hohenzollern Bridge, then visit the Chocolate Museum or Museum Ludwig.
- Day 4A day trip by trainFrom Berlin, Potsdam and the palaces of Sanssouci are about 30 minutes away by regional train with an ABC ticket. From Munich, Neuschwanstein Castle takes about three hours each way by train and bus, and you must book a guided tour ahead. The Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site is closer, 20 to 25 minutes away. From Cologne, take a short train ride to Bonn, Beethoven's birthplace, or from March to November to the palaces at Brühl.
- Day 5Museums and a free afternoonIn Berlin, choose a museum on Museum Island; the Pergamonmuseum stays closed until part of it reopens on 4 June 2027. In Munich, tour the Residenz, Germany's largest palace in a city centre. In Cologne, try a glass of Kölsch, the local beer, in a traditional brewhouse. Keep the afternoon free for shopping or a long last lunch.
