6-Day Iceland Nature & Northern Lights
Base yourself in Reykjavík for six days, with a day on the Golden Circle, a day on the South Coast and two chances to see the Northern Lights. The lights show only from about September to April, need dark and clear skies, and are never guaranteed.

A suggested plan
- Day 1Arrive in ReykjavíkFly to Keflavík. The Flybus runs after every arrival and takes about 45 minutes into Reykjavík. In the evening, try one of the city's geothermal pools; everyone showers without swimwear before getting in.
- Day 2Reykjavík and a first Northern Lights nightSee the city from the tower of Hallgrímskirkja, then walk down to Harpa concert hall and the Old Harbour. After dark, join a Northern Lights tour out of the city. Go early in your stay, because many operators let you rebook free if the sky stays cloudy.
- Day 3The Golden CircleSpend the day on the Golden Circle, a loop of about 250 km from Reykjavík. Walk through the rift at Þingvellir National Park, where Iceland's parliament first met in 930. Watch Strokkur erupt every 8 to 10 minutes at Geysir, then see the Hvítá river drop into its canyon at Gullfoss.
- Day 4The South CoastTake a guided day trip along the South Coast. Walk behind Seljalandsfoss when the path is open, and climb the trail beside Skógafoss. At Reynisfjara, check the warning lights at the entrance and keep well back from the water, because sneaker waves can sweep people away in seconds.
- Day 5A free day and a second try for the lightsChoose whale watching from the Old Harbour, a geothermal lagoon, or snorkelling in the Silfra fissure with a licensed operator. From November, guided ice-cave tours run when conditions allow. In the evening, head out for the Northern Lights again if the first night was cloudy.
- Day 6HomeCheck out and take the Flybus back to Keflavík. Allow extra time in winter, when snow and wind can slow the roads.
