Who can apply from the UK
You can apply in the UK if you live here, for example on an eVisa as a worker, student, family member or with settled status. VFS asks for your share code and eVisa record, and your status must be valid for at least one month after you return from the Schengen area.
Living in the UK does not remove the need for a visa. The High Commission says this also applies to holders of UK refugee or stateless person's travel documents, whatever their nationality.
Malta must be your main destination: the country where you spend the longest or, if your stays are equal, the first Schengen country you visit.
You hand in your file at VFS in London, Manchester or Edinburgh. Files from Manchester and Edinburgh go to London first, so allow more time.
If you hold a UK short-stay visitor visa, VFS says you must apply in your country of residence instead.

Where and when to apply
Malta takes UK short-stay applications through VFS Global in London, Manchester or Edinburgh. Apply no earlier than 6 months and no later than 16 days before you travel.
VFS Global runs three UK centres for the High Commission of Malta in London, which decides every Schengen (C) visa. Long-stay national (D) visas go to Identità, Malta's visa authority, instead.

Worth knowing about this consulate
- Malta wants fully paid, confirmed flight tickets with proof of payment, not reservations. A provisional or part-paid ticket, or one booked through a travel agency not registered in the UK, makes the application invalid. Package holidays paid in instalments must show at least 75% paid.
- Your bank balance must cover at least £48 for each day in the Schengen area, plus any travel and accommodation costs still to pay. Your travel insurance must come from a UK-registered insurer.
- Since 24 March 2025, VFS has required London applications at least 16 calendar days before departure, one day more than the High Commission's 15-day rule. VFS recommends 3 extra working days in Manchester or Edinburgh, and late files do not proceed.
- VFS shows the €90 visa fee as £77 and the €45 child fee as £39, at the current exchange rate, plus a £27.38 service fee including VAT. VFS lists card, postal order or cash (not in Manchester or Edinburgh), while the High Commission says the visa fee is paid in cash only, so bring cash and a card. No fee is refunded.
- The centres are at 66 Wilson Street, London EC2A 2BT; 50 Devonshire Street North, Manchester M12 6JH; and 1 Rennie's Isle, Leith, Edinburgh EH6 6QT. Appointments are booked only through VFS's online portal, one per person.
- VFS says supporting documents must be no older than 1 month. A marriage certificate issued outside the EU and not in English needs a certified UK translation.
- The High Commission answers visa questions only in writing, at visa.london@gov.mt. If you are refused, you can appeal to Malta's Immigration Appeals Board within 15 days of being notified, for a fee of €120.
