Who can apply from the UK

You can apply in the UK if you live here legally, for example on an eVisa as a worker, student, family member or with settled status. Norway's UK checklist asks for a share code showing your status is valid for at least one month after you leave the Schengen area.

Norway must be your main destination, by length or purpose of stay. If you have no main destination, apply to the Schengen country where you first enter.

You hand in your file at VFS in London or Edinburgh. Every applicant attends in person, children and infants included.

VFS asks for a valid UK residence permit. If you do not live in the UK, the embassy only considers your application if you prove you are in the UK legally and explain why you are applying in London.

  • Bank statements Your own UK statements for the last 3 months showing the current balance, plus your credit card statement. Norway's UK checklist asks for at least NOK 500 a day. If your spouse or parents pay and travel with you, add their statements, proof of the relationship and their letter of support.
  • Job or study evidence Employees: a recent, signed official letter from your employer and 3 months of payslips. Self-employed: a recent letter from your accountant, banker or solicitor and your self-assessment. Students: a recent, signed letter from your UK school, college or university.
  • Invitation or sponsorship form (family or friend visits) A copy of your host's passport or Norwegian residence permit, their invitation and proof of your relationship if you are related. If a person or company in Norway pays for your trip, they fill in UDI's sponsorship form instead, online with Norwegian electronic ID or on paper.
  • Children's documents A birth certificate for every child under 18. If a child travels alone or with one parent: both parents' passports or certified copies of the photo pages, written consent and a British school certificate. With sole custody: a birth certificate naming one parent, a death certificate or a court ruling.
  • VFS appointment VFS says the applicant books the appointment online, in the right category, and pays the €27 service fee by card to confirm it. Each person needs their own appointment. We tell you when your file is ready and plan everything else around your date.

We provide

  • Application form and UDI portal registration We register your application in UDI's online portal, where the visa fee is paid online. You sign the printed form and bring it with the portal's cover letter and payment receipt.

  • Return flight reservation A reserved return ticket to the UK, plus every onward leg if you visit several countries. The embassy advises not buying tickets until the visa is granted.
  • Hotel bookings Confirmed hotel bookings for your whole stay in Norway and any other Schengen country, or a tour or cruise confirmation. VFS warns that missing travel or hotel bookings will likely lead to refusal.
  • Travel medical insurance At least €30,000 of cover, valid in every Schengen country for your whole trip, including repatriation.

Where and when to apply

Norway takes UK short-stay applications through VFS Global in London or Edinburgh. Apply no earlier than 6 months and no later than 15 days before you travel.

VFS Global takes every UK application for the Royal Norwegian Embassy in London, which decides most cases and refers some to UDI, Norway's immigration directorate. You register and pay online in UDI's portal first, and the embassy takes no applications in person or by post.

Worth knowing about this consulate

  • On 22 June 2026 VFS said it cannot currently meet the full demand for appointments, while the embassy is renovated until about the end of 2026. Book as soon as you know your dates, especially for Easter, July, August and Christmas.
  • You register and pay the €90 visa fee in UDI's online portal before your appointment. If you have not paid online, you can pay at the centre.
  • VFS charges a €27 service fee including VAT, paid online to confirm your slot. At the centre you can pay by card, postal order or cash, but Edinburgh takes no cash. Fees are not refundable.
  • Since 3 August 2026, VFS has warned that the embassy keeps your passport while it decides a Schengen visa. If you need your passport within 3 weeks of your appointment, apply later.
  • Book the right appointment category, or VFS will not take your documents. Tourists show hotel bookings or an itinerary for Norway; family visitors show an invitation or sponsorship form.
  • Cruise passengers sailing from the UK to Norway can walk in to VFS London or Edinburgh without an appointment, Monday to Friday from 11:00 to 13:00. Fjord cruises that start in Norway do not qualify.

Norway visa questions from UK residents

Where do I apply for a Norway visa in the UK?

You register and pay online in UDI's portal, then hand in your file at VFS Global in London or Edinburgh. The embassy does not accept applications in person or by post.

How long does a Norway visa take from the UK?

The embassy decides most cases within 15 days of receiving your file, or up to 45 calendar days if UDI is involved. Courier time between VFS and the embassy comes on top, so apply at least 4 weeks ahead.

How much is a Norway Schengen visa from the UK?

The visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11. Children under 6 pay nothing. VFS adds a €27 service fee including VAT.

Can I keep my passport while my Norway visa is processed?

Plan to be without it. VFS says the embassy keeps your passport while it decides a Schengen visa, so apply later if you need your passport within 3 weeks of your appointment.

Do I need a sponsorship form to visit family in Norway?

Only if your host pays for your trip. They fill in UDI's sponsorship form online with Norwegian electronic ID or on paper. Otherwise send their invitation, a copy of their passport or residence permit and proof of your relationship.

Can I visit Svalbard on a Norway Schengen visa?

Svalbard is part of Norway but outside the Schengen area. The embassy asks you to apply for a visa with 2 or more entries so you can come back into the Schengen area afterwards.

Can I visit other Schengen countries on a Norway visa?

Yes. A Schengen visa covers all 29 Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180, as long as Norway is your main destination.
